Edge of the Apocalypse: Chapter 6 – Lessons

Allen also had a terrible expression on his face, but rather than being scared of the lieutenant’s voice, he was shocked by the light the man had emitted from his body as he shouted.

That was the light of Origin, but it was different from the cold, silver aura that he saw from Bai Fang. The lieutenant had a pale red aura that gave off a domineering scent.

Other than the lieutenant, Allen could also see the same aura from a few other Instructors. But compared to the lieutenant, their aura was significantly paler. Despite that, Allen could tell that these men were not someone he could offend, or at least not now.

He decided to follow with the lieutenant’s commands. He knew that his life was as insignificant as an ant’s to this man, and he was definitely not someone he could anger. He needed to live, only by surviving could he exact revenge on Andy.

This was also his mother’s wish!

Under the lieutenant’s orders, a few of the soldiers scattered a yellow powder around the children as he spoke, “Now, lets begin a simple test. Believe me, it’s extremely simple.”

A cruel smile appeared on his face, “I only need all of you to stand here for ten minutes, completely still. More importantly, no one is allowed to leave this yellow circle, if anyone disobeys this order, well…”

Taking out a revolver from his waist, lieutenant Ron waved the gun around, his intention was clear.

The yellow power quickly formed an uneven circle on the ground, circling the hundred terrified children together. Taking a deep breath, Allen could smell a sharp sour smell from the power. The scent was so strong it almost caused him to tear up, and it seemed to have more use than just for a drawing.

It seemed more like a product used to contain something.

Allen was quickly proven correct as a few soldiers appeared with sealed alloy barrel. After keying in a password, the bottom of the electronic barrel opened to reveal millions of tiny red lights inside.

Fear appeared in the child’s eyes as they retreated backwards, a few of the timid ones even fell to the floor.

Suddenly, a small creature jumped out from the barrel. It was an ant the size of a cicada, gnawing at the children with its protruding jaws.

“That’s a volcanic ant, they live near the entrance of volcanos and are extremely sensitive to movement. If I were you, I’d stay extremely still.” Lieutenant Ron spoke with a cruel smile.

A few of the soldiers started banging the barrels. Affected by the vibrations, large amounts of volcanic ants rushed out from the barrels. As if they were red waves, they poured out onto the grounds as they familiarised themselves with their surroundings. And as some of the children started to cry out of fear, these ants immediately found their target and charged towards the children like waves of water.

Taking a deep breath, Allen slowed his heartbeat. This was a tactic he learnt from the snow wolves, they used this ability to camouflage themselves as they got closer to the prey, so to deal a killing blow.

Taking as many breaths as he could, he watched as the ants moved closer towards the feet of the children. And just before they started to climb on his feet, he tried his best to slow his breathing, stopping his body from reacting involuntarily.

Of course, the other children were not like Allen. More than half of the children started to scream as they stomped and slapped the ants. Undeterred, these large ants had tore the tender skin of these children with ease and even started to climb into the children’s orifices, like their ears, noses and even lower body.

And within a minute, a few dozen children were already collapsed on the floor, vomiting blood as the ants consumed their insides.

Unable to control themselves, a few young boys screamed as they ran out of the yellow circle. Seeing that the lieutenant did nothing to stop them, the few other children started to follow them as well, and only after a dozen children had left the circle did the lieutenant nod towards his soldiers.

With just a few gunshots, the soldiers easily killed the escaped children with their rifles. Ron even joined along with his vicious looking revolver, exploding a girl’s brain with a single shot. And as the children’s bodies fell, they quickly became a feast for the volcanic ants.

Allen simply stopped his breathing and closed his eyes, allowing the volcanic ants to climb all over his body as he stood there silently. Even as they covered his entire body, he stood as still as a rock. Ron quickly noticed him and turned to an instructor, “There seems to be a decent fellow among them, he even knew to slow his heartbeat. Look, those damn ants thinks he’s a rock.”

“Get his number down.”

The instructor nodded.

Ten minutes finally passed, and with a snap of Ron’s finger, ten of the soldiers immediately shot at the children with water guns. As cold water sprayed on their bodies, Allen could feel his body get lighter. The ants that were once climbing on his body were washed away and left to struggle in the water, quickly dying in seconds. Licking the water at his lips, a strong sour taste exploded in his mouth.

Something was mixed into the water, something that was toxic to these volcanic ants.

The spray lasted for a minute, and when they were done, only a third of the children were left. At least fifty were killed by the ants, while the remaining ten were killed by Ron and his soldiers.

In just ten minutes, there were only thirty five people left on the training grounds. Only now did Allen truly understood what Ron meant by “hell”.

“Congratulations, you’ve passed the first test, and also the hardest test.” Ron looked at the remaining children. These children were completely drenched, and with the wet clothes stuck to them, the bodies of the girls could be seen clearly. Glaring at the girls, Ron continued, “This is my first lesson for you, complete obedience. If you follow my commands, you might survive. If you choose to disobey, you’ll definitely die!”

“I believe those escaped soldiers have already proved this point.”

Clapping his hands together, Ron continued, “Alright, your morning class will end here. These are some instructions regarding the《Survival Game》, some of you might still be lost on why you’re here, you can use this chance to learn. In a while, the instructors will bring you to your barrack. When you hear a whistle, I expect all of you to be in front of me within 15 seconds. Otherwise, the consequences will be yours to bear.”

“Disperse!”

After a while, Allen and the others were bright to a simple barrack.

With steel bars creating its structure, the barracks was covered with steel plates and contained two rows of simple metal beds. Without hesitation, Allen picked a bed in the corner at least three meters away from a window. Children loved to sleep next to windows, and after years of living in the wilderness, Allen instinctively chose an unexposed corner to rest.

As his clothes were already drenched, he simply took them off. And not long after, a few instructors brought their uniforms consisting of a simple green singlet, long camouflage pants and black army boots, the best clothes Allen had gotten in five years. The instructors watched as the children changed into their uniforms, and as the barracks housed both genders, the girls had no choice but to change under the gazes of the crowd. Some of them had already started puberty, revealing their developing chests.

This naturally attracted looks from the Instructors and some of the boys, Allen included. But with the long years he spent with the snow wolves, he had little knowledge of the differences in genders. But unlike him, the older children that already had experiences in this area had gazes more heated than the rest.

As the children changed, about ten more instructors suddenly appeared. Each of them had a whip in their hands and they started lashing out the naked children indiscriminately.

Screams erupted in the room instantly.

Because of his location, Allen had an additional two seconds to react compared to the rest. And as an instructor lashed at him, he was able to roll onto a bed, avoiding the whip. Slightly confused, the instructor flicked his wrist again, throwing the whip at Allen who jumped onto the ground and avoided the second lash.

“Fuck!” Cursing softly, the instructor struck again.

Seeing that the whip was aimed at his head, Allen immediately reached his hands to protect his head. Curling up, Allen tried to reduce the area of impact and leaned to the side, letting the whip land on his left arm.

A few more lashes followed.

Anguished cries could be heard from the barracks, but as quickly as the attack came, it left. In just five seconds, the instructors stopped themselves. Each child had received three whips, other than Allen who had six, two times more than the rest of the children.

At this moment, Lieutenant Ron walked in with his signature smile, “Little fries, how’s the whipping? Remember this, you’re here to receive the strictest training to eventually survive in the cruelest game. This place is not your home, attacks can happen at any time. You must remain alert in every moment, and learn the art of taking blows as fast as you can!”

“This, is the second lesson I have for you!”
